Flinders Island, TAS - Hunting for Killiecrankie Diamonds
« on: October 14, 2021, 12:01:45 PM »
Hi all!

My husband and I have never been to Flinders before but are soon taking our first trip to hunt for killiecrankie diamonds.

We were wondering if anybody had any recommendations for places we should check out or any tips?

Any help would be much appreciates!

Thank you!

First, you won't need a Tasmanian Fossicking permit prior to commencing, as Killicrankie is a designated fossicking area. Anywhere around that particular beach is worth a look, including the mouth of the creek. Low tide it's always worth a look. As it is an area that has seen a lot of fossicking, you may have to shift a lot of sand, at least it shouldn't be dirty work. If you have a look on the Mineral Resources Tasmania website, they have a map of the area defining where you can look without a permit, it should guide you in your search. Good luck.

Try and plan your trip so the low tides are at a decent time of day. It would also help if you can look up a tide chart for the lowest low tides.

Bass straight water can get really cold. Wet suit pants could be a help. Tides and water temperatures can be easily found online. Water temp today is 12.8C which would have you turning blue if you were in it for too long.

Thanks for the tips! We had our first day out today and had some luck! Nothing huge - but exciting none the less :) We timed in for low tide as suggested and it worked out pretty well! It was a lovely day in the bay and surprisingly, the water wasn't too cold.

That sounds good KM09 we were lucky when we went there too with the water temperature actually being nice and warm, a little offshoot of the East Australian current was just in the right place at the right time. Have a look in the little gift shop in Whitemark, Run by ? Wheatley they have some beautiful Topaz.
