Lune River Fern Knife - Last but not least.
« on: January 19, 2022, 10:32:51 AM »
This is the last knife I'll be making in the foreseeable future, it is a Buck 110 with Lune River fern scales. I only just got the scales out of the rough, there was less than 1mm space left on the slabs I cut them from. Very happy with the result, the white matches the brass and fern eyes curve nicely to suit the curves of the handle. I have upload a few macros aswell showing all the little agates in the fern eyes which is pretty cool :)
Enjoy

Thanks Wal, this one was my favorite. A bit sad sending it off to a new home.  :(

Absolutely spectacular - we have been down to lune a few times now but we must be in the wrong spots haha ive never seen anything like this, My son is 6 and daughters 8 and they are addicted to fossicking with there dad, something we have all gotten into over the last few yesars as my son and hubby has always had a rock fetish :)
We will have to head back down again and try again maybe we were not holding our mouths right haha

again beautiful piece

Welcome to the forum joannavoss.
It is hard to find good undug spots, I mapped up a large area over a couple of days using my soil probes. The pieces used for the knives came from about 1.8m deep. A lot of hard work to dig :)You are lucky your kids will go there, full of cutting grass, mozzie, snakes, sandflies, and lots of leaches. At about the age of 12 my kids refused to go there anymore. Later in the year, maybe in spring as I am fairly busy atm and I'm not going down the Lune in the winter, I don't mind showing your family a few spots. If you haven't got soil probes for find the gravel areas let me know and I'll post how I made mine.

Again, welcome joannavoss. If you've been to Lune River you're one up on me. If you want to learn more about fossicking, look at joining the Tasmanian Lapidary Club if you're in Hobart, they have a couple of trips schedules for Lune River later this year. By going with experienced fossickers, they will help point you in the right direction when you're there. I'm pretty sure MakkyBrown is a member there, although he's a very busy person.  Good luck with the hunt.
