Jet from Newcastle
« on: March 11, 2022, 07:26:53 PM »
I recently bought a small piece of polished jet and was told it came from the Newcastle coal mines and could be found on between the seams. This was the first i  had heard of this occurrence of jet.  I knew there used to be a jet mine in Hartley Vale in the 1800s but to my knowledge there is no trace of it now. I didn't think jet was necessarily associated with coal seams. Has anyone else heard of newcastle jet (apart from the footballers!)?

I just googled Jet. I wonder if that is what I've dug down here in Tas digging for wood. I didn't know it was called Jet. Was thinking of making chess pieces from it. Real glassy black.

thanks! This stuff has a kind of low gloss on it when polished and is fairly light. Was popular in the Victorian era apparently.

Sounds interesting ann3244, I always like to know the provenance for any shop bought items, adds to the fun! Whilst I haven't heard of Newcastle jet myself, I was fortunate to find some jet whilst on a recent short breakaway with the fam (we were just above Batesmans Bay).

Curious if anyone here has previously worked with jet (tumble, lap or facet)?

Any possibility it came from Newcastle, in the UK? They certainly mined coal there.

My thoughts exactly wallie. Jet is fossilised Monkey Puzzle tree famously from around Whitby which is a short distance from Newcastle UK.
