O'briens Ck
« on: April 28, 2022, 09:25:17 PM »
Hi everyone
Anyone going to O'Briens Ck this year. We're thinking of heading up in July. I'm assuming the caravan park is still operational?

Hi Claude, yes it is still open.  Will not be up that way till next year.

Here is the link to the campsite https://www.facebook.com/Obriens-Creek-Campground-1040725016036826/

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Dom, friends of mine will be up there late June. They are planning to stay at the cara park. I will be joining them at Sapphire around 30June for a few days. Will you be driving north? or flying?
Baaa humbug, not enough fossicking time!

Hi dom105,

I just left O'briens Crk on the 10th of June after being there for 2.5 weeks and 2.5 weeks at Agate Crk prior to that.
Yes the campground is open and the caretaker Simon is a great bloke, there is lots of water in Elizabeth Crk and it's still in pools in O'briens Crk itself.

When we got there it was just after Easter and the school holidays and apparently people where there and Agate Crk early this years and both places copped a flogging, it was difficult at O'briens to find anywhere that had not been dug, even up Blue Hills rd above the jump ups.

If you go and you don't find anything, there is always the option to visit Roger on the corner of the campground near the amenities block, he always has Topaz and Smokies for sale, he told us he had been there since late March and would probably be there until August. Say hi to him for me we became friendly during our visit to O'briens, he also enjoys a drink around the campfire of a night.

We found a few Small Topaz and a few Smokies, nothing to brag about, It's hard digging and you've just got to be in the right place at the right time. Like when we were there a young bloke that had never been fossicking before and had to ask Roger to show him what he was looking for, Found a 207 carat blue in his first sieve full. You might have better luck than us. Good luck

Ranger Itchy sorry you did not get a big topaz but I bet you had fun exploring.  :)

Never heard the track up to McDonalds called Blue Hills Rd before. It can be pretty rough as no work has been done on it since 2001 except a tyre dragged along it. These days Blue Hills is still outside the fossicking area and no permissions to access can be granted. The Falls track also has been off limits for a long time.
Cheers,Jerry

Hi Jimnyjerry,

Yes I had fun exploring, but my knees are paying the price for it now!

I referred to the track as Blue Hills rd beause at the track on your left that goes to Crystal and Swampy there is a sign that also says Blue Hills Rd for the jump up track.
I also don't know exactly where blue hills is because it's not marked on my map, same with the Falls, not on my map so if I was outside the designated fossicking area and there are no signs to say so, how would I know?
Anyway I probably won't be back, been there done that!
Joints been flogged out by greedy profiteering people!
And will take another 10 million years to restore to how it used to be!

Hi guys
Just back from Lightning Ridge, thanks for all the information. It will be our first trip up there for probably 4 yrs, so we weren't sure as to what to expect.
Hey Jamo, it's been forever, we'll be up probably the second week in JULY as it's our sons 40th birthday, first week of July and come to think of it, Lesley's as well, I hope someone is still up there by then.
