Cardinia creek or other sapphire areas to fossick
« on: June 19, 2022, 04:37:16 PM »
Hi all I am loving this gemstone fossicking thing… but…. No luck with sapphires at Beechworth or Eldorado… closer to home the Cardinia creek seems to have an embargo on it..
is there any where that the many non newbies could suggest?

Yes. The sapphire fields central QLD, this is a good time of year to go, little or no rain and cool.

No embargo as such on Cardinia Creek, it's just that the fossicking area itself is now under a considerable amount of water. Most of the creeks in the Dandenongs are worth a look but obviously not in National Parks or other similar areas. Also check with land owners before entering private property. Years ago, there were sapphires and zircons in the area located between Tatong and Tolmie, not sure of the current status of that area as it was closed to Stringybark Creek and the Kelly Tree. Sounds like you might do well to join a local lapidary club, there are a number spread through the suburbs, Essendon, Nunawading, Mordiallic, Warrigul and Dandenong are a few that spring to mind. There are others. Most of the clubs have organised field trips regularly, they usually have a leader who knows the area and will show you where to go to find whatever it is you're looking for.
Common sense isn't exactly common

Toombulup ....ive read a bit on that location via the Vic gemstones book. Appreciate the info to all that have responded. I have had one trip to reedy creek but we are thinking that the areas we tried were just too fossiked out!! Im not sure how far up we can go there and where we should be looking.
Any other locations to try would be appreciated
