Naturally speaking, Opal, 'To potch or not to potch'
« on: July 28, 2022, 10:56:47 AM »
Now, here lies the question.I was always taught that for an opal to be considered a solid and worthy of the title, that it was to have no potch on the base whatsoever.Wind forward 10-15 years, now there's videos streaming with folk leaving the potch on the back, which as we know, will enhance the colour most times but they're still claiming it as eg, a solid black and they seem to be valuing them at the top price per carat.(Or do I have that wrong?)

What the what? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
In the day, I was told that an opal with potch still attached(we're talking potch already there, not glued on) was called a natural doublet.

A true solid opal that has no natural potch I've now heard referred to as a black crystal.Who's rewriting the accepted?Where do we now find, facts as accepted by all the Gemmo affiliations as the standard to be followed?
While I'm on the subject of Opals, years ago there was system that you could purchase where you'd enter the details of your opal in, body tone, brilliance, dimensions etc and it would give you the basic rate/real time as to ballpark figure of that specific opal. Is this still available, has it been renamed?
And it would seem we can pretty much call the pattern within our opal something new if it doesn't fit the norm.
Here's a question, what is it called when there's an image of something within the stone that has formed naturally? like Jesus on the cloth for example? I have seriously forgotten the name.
Keep em comin!!!
