Getting Started
« on: April 24, 2023, 08:03:54 PM »
Hello, I’ve inherited both rough and cut sapphires from my mum who sadly passed a few years ago.  I’m looking to start getting the rough stones cut so that I can have them used in jewellery.  I’ve read that Lamberts in Thailand might be a good option.
Can anyone recommend a size and cut that would suit typical jewellery that I could sell or give to my family without needing to custom or bespoke make each piece.
I’m looking at send 500ct as my first parcel. I assume I will need to pay Lamberts the price per Carat I send and not what I get back ?

I've always found Lamberts good to deal with, but others have not.  I usually order clear or eye clear gems cut to the stone I want, when sending them overseas, when you make your customs declaration on the package always put "Rock Sample only", no monetary value otherwise you will get a customs tax put on your package. Good luck with your new endeavor, others on this site will be able to advise you regarding carret size.

A bit slow at the moment but worth the wait. tunnler

Thank you for your trust in our company and your cutting order with us which we already received since the last quarter of 2022.

Now we are very, very busy, which is a good sign, and we are of course happy about it.

We lost one cutter in the middle of 2022 and another one passed in November due to the Covid-19.  And also, during the Covid pandemic many cutters went back home to their families and did not return.

However, the waiting queue is quite long due to not having enough cutters.

It has always been difficult to recruit trained and trustworthy cutters.

That means, it is even more difficult to find new cutters. But we are doing the best we can and try to finish as soon as we can.

If you are in no hurry to get the stones cut, then we can cut for you.  Your rough stones will be safe with us, but we can't promise to have them cut faster. We need at least 5 to 6 more months to finish your order. But if you do not want to wait and need them back, we will send them back to you.  Please let us know how you would like to proceed?

Once again, our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Kind regards,

Good question and glad you asked it before sending the stones over.  I strongly recommend you pay the small amount extra cost to get them cut to calibrated sizes.  Ask them to cut as the rough indicates but to calibrated sizes.  They will charge a bit extra for this because they will lose a little bit of weight if not cut for maximum weight but it is definitely worth the small additional cost.

If you do it this way, then you can set the cut stones in off-the-shelf calibrated size settings rather than have to get settings custom made.  Calibrated settings are very affordable and you can probably set them yourself.  If you need a manufacturing jeweller to make it from scratch, you will have to pay a LOT extra.  For large special stones, it might be worth it.  For the type of smaller stones you are going to be sending to Lamberts, it is NOT worth it.

You will pay for cut weight.  They will send back what they cannot cut.  You might ask them to cut eye clean stones but consider cabbing some pieces that are not quite good enough to facet.

Cheers
Leah
