Bendigo and Surrounds Gemstone location's
« on: September 23, 2022, 10:10:12 AM »
Hi all I have now moved on to Bendigo. I would love some help to find some places local and surrounding region for gemstones. I already know about Beechworth, Daylesford and kooyoora state park. Any ideas on rivers and creeks? And does anyone know if you can access the old quarry at pyramid Hill.

The Mt Pleasant range from Heathcote to near Corop has good Jasper. Apart from that not a lot. Plenty of Quartz everywhere. There was a report in the mineralogical society mag some years back about Sapphires near St Arnaud. Decent Smokey can occasionally be found in creeks around Mt Alexander. Nice water worn smokeys and even some Topaz in creeks around Tooborac, towards the top of the hills heading towards Romsey.

I agree with Rusted, some very nice jasper around Heathcote, I also seem to remember some nice clear quartz crystals being dug from that area on a field trip long, long ago. Can't remember the location, except it was near Heathcote.
Common sense isn't exactly common

One I forgot, there is a quarry somewhere up around Echuca that digs up horrible white clayey stuff to put on the back roads, if you are driving around the Mt Pleasant range, around the Myola area, also the back road along the Campaspe, keep your eyes peeled for where they have spread this stuff, summer it's clouds of white dust, winter lakes of white mud but there are really nice lumps of white Chert with red markings hidden in it, really nice stuff. It doesn't look much when you see it on the road but it polishes really well.

Any exact known locations?

Or any known rivers or creeks?

And lastly to find such items like Jasper; what am I looking for in terms of geographic signs?
