Glenrowan Opal

Hi. According to Mindat there is Opal at Glenrowan. Has anyone seen any from that area or where to fossick for it. (I’m a bit doubtful).

Hi RufusD, I can't actually help you with that one at Glenrowan, but opal in its common form can and does occur in Victoria. I can remember fossicking for some in Gippsland in my younger days. It doesn't have colour and looks like orange/brown glass and can be clear to cloudy. Very brittle to work with.

I only know of common Opal in Victoria, I collected some of the stuff many years ago and attempted to cut it, it broke and the sharp edge just about removed my thumb, some surgery and a lot of time later and I can use my thumb just fine, though I never got feeling back in it.
