Halls Extra quill attachment help please.
« on: June 23, 2024, 02:41:56 PM »
Hi everybody,
I have a Halls Extra in pieces and am trying to reassemble.
I am unable to find any drawings of how the quill is attached to the protractor arm?
The index wheel goes on and the quill fits into the two bearings inside the protractor arm.
There is a threaded hole in the end of the quill and this lines up with one of the grub screw holes that are used to fasten arm to pivot pin.
Can someone post info/ photo/ drawing of what I am missing please.
Thanking you.

Thanks very much for your help.
I have that manual and there is not enough detail in it to show what holds the quill in place.
Maybe my question should be:- How do you remove the quill from the Halls Extra?

I have clipped a bit of the drawings from the manual showing the quill in the protractor arm, the blue rectangle I have drawn is the two bearings the quill seats in.
But what stops it from falling out?

Buggar, I can not work out how to post an image.
I got it to the gallery, but...

I'm no engineer, but is it possible the quill is pressed in to the bearings, i.e a friction-fit?
Hopefully there are some owners of Hall machines that can help further.
If you can take a clear photo of your various pieces and upload to the Gallery, that may help. I can insert the pictures into the thread if you have problems.

It would almost certainly be that the quill is a press in fit to those bearings, if the quill can easily move, you can lightly and evenly center punch small raised parts for the quill to grip onto the bearings.

I have a Hall Xtra but have never dismantled it.
From inspecting mine, Here's how I would go about finding out.
Remove the index wheel, two screws hold it on, After a while they get a bit of grot around them and are difficult to move, try a bit of WD40.
Under that there are two cheese head screws and a counter sunk one at the top that appear to hold the whole index cheater assembly on, remove them and see what happens, I can only presume that somewhere in that cheater sub assembly is hidden the magic screw to remove the quill.

Thank you everyone for your help.
I have it all back together and working well.
One gentleman gave me the exact answer I needed and solved my dilemma.

Cheers.
