New Design Books
« on: September 26, 2024, 09:20:56 AM »
Hi, I have just received 2 new books of designs by Phan Thanh Trung, aka Viet Gems.   Each book has 9 design and every one uses frosted facets to create pictures or patterns within the stone.
The books are published, printed and are available from Tom Ross, aka Dr. Facet, in Des Moines, Iowa, USA.
I shall be adding these books to my collection, alongside all the ones I already have by Andrew Brown, Long & Steele, and everything that was available from the Australian Facetors' Guild, etc.
I think there maybe 4 books by Viet Gems, although the design numbers that I have range up to 202 so there maybe more books or lots of unpublished designs.
Cheers to you all, beers
Ghost.

Interesting,
He has a few free designs floating around on a public Facebook Group, too.

Thanks RC.
Found 'Vietgems - Recut The World' Web page by going through Instagram and Facebook.
Looks like the cutter / designer is located in Vietnam.
He has an interesting looking machine that you might like to view as well, if you haven't already.

I received my AB ""Briolettes" issue... now I have dog dreams of finishing an India Briolette but 380 total facets? Got an 80 index... now to figure out which way is up? 🤔

Thanks Alaskan  :) Go pavilion first, leave the sharper crown angles to last that way you are less likely to break the tip.

Been having eyesight problems - prescription glasses are not working - going back to another nice Supernova today on C2.

A thought for a MB theme faceting design book - Neolithic Designs - scrapers - arrow heads - spear points - how to cut a Clovis blade?

Just a thought - my favorite subject is how we got here and why it took so long to advance this last one hundred years?

Thank you, MB,
Ken.

I found a perfect leaf shaped flint scraper on the desert sand in Southern Idaho rock hounding with my Dad. Shoshone ~ 3" x 2" x .4" lost to an old girl friend 50 years ago.

The shape was symmetrical at both ends and had small amounts of lichen dried and hardened proving ancient lineage & still sharp enough to scrape hides.

A generous curve to both double end points  were round and perfect as a scraper would be that might be held between thumb and forefinger.
