Does anybody know details of pink Dynalap laps
« on: October 29, 2024, 02:07:56 PM »
Can anyone tell me what a pink Spectrum type lap is?
Is it cerium oxide and what percentage?
I purchased a used machine and a couple came with it. I've been using them for a while and quite a few stones (quartz), so they work well and I wanted to replace them. But I can't find anybody that sells pink laps.
Blue, brown etc but not pink.
Thanks

Yes, I think they are cerium. You could just reload your old one. Put some cerium oxide+water in a small spray bottle, like for clearing glasses, shake and put a few sprays onto the lap. If the thin plastic lap is badly worn some people use dvds as a lap with cerium. The brown ones would be cerium as well, the blue are probably tin oxide. The pink would most likely be a higher grade Cerium than the brown.

Cheers

Use Lucite laps instead, sanded in water with 120 grit wet or dry sandpaper. Gemcuts sell 8" ones for $17.50. As MB says use a spray bottle with cerium, I prefer an artist's brush with a cerium-water mix.

I've been reloading it for ages and it's been fine. But it has some damage and is thin so needs changing. I contacted a supplier and they didn't know of pink ones. They have some Dynalap blue ones which I'm told are the better grade of cerium ones. I've tried CDs but they didn't work for me.

I had a lucite one and it was great but then started to scratch and I was unable to fix it. Just couldn't get rid of the scratches. I just had a bottle of cerium water mix and used my fingers to transfer to the lap occasionally. Yes, I always washed my hands before. But I might try again and use the sandpaper as you suggested to see if that fixes it.

I've tried CDs and DVDs for final 8 to 14 and even 50 grit. I can't see a difference from14 to 50 + K. Try it again... it works.
I'm using 8" Corian laps now - no master needed and they clean up to use in different grits... 1.) 3K & 5K and 2). 8K to 14K...  3). 50K & 100 K. Each group share Corian laps after cleaning with alcohol and detergents. Wax the Corian surface and use trombone instrument oil.
