Slabbing Saw Oil
« on: October 16, 2024, 04:37:21 PM »
Learned colleagues, I am looking for a good quality cutting oil for my 18" slabbing saw.  For the passed 15 years I've been using an oily messy substance that covers everything with oil,  I am wondering if there is an alternative biodegradable cutting compound.  I use a synthetic cutting oil on my trip saw which is water soluble, is there a similar oil I can use in my slabbing saw

I use soluble oil, like this   https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/166498718570?   I notice there is a 15% voucher on offer. So $52.70 seems a pretty decent price.I think I diluted it at something like 20:1, turns into a heap. Doesn't produce rock snot like normal cutting oil. I'm not sure if it's will be as good on a large saw. But it cheap and very user friendly. No more horrible clean ups.

Our club has been using miscible oil for a while now in our bigger saws. Seem to work well, is far cheaper than some other light oils and as you say, much cleaner to work with when clean up comes along. The only thing we've had to do, particularly in Summer is to close the covers to avoid evaporation of the water content. When this happens you end up with a slightly gummy residue on the carrier and vice. It cleans up OK, but just takes a liitle longer.
Common sense isn't exactly common

When my coolant level gets low, I just poor in water. Been doing that for awhile might need to do a cleanup sometime.

I use mineral oil and a simple tile saw... works for the smaller chunks and if necessary turning the piece around following the marks a-lot plan.
