Black Opal?
« on: November 16, 2024, 02:23:52 PM »
Hello everyone. Amazing what you find when you go down the rabbit hole. What an amazing forum. I have to confess that I didnt particularly like opals previously. My (very limited) experience was that they were all blue green and (forgive me) a tad boring. Well recently I purchased via police auction a slightly beaten up 14k gold opal ring. I have since watched most of Justins and many other videos on Lightening Ridge, Boulder and Ethiopian opals to try and determine in fact what it is that I have purchased. It was sold as a Boulder opal ring. However I cant see any presence of ironstone but I am no expert obviously ;D I want to identify what sort of opal it is and if it is Australian then find somewhere that can re polish the face. The rear looks very shiny still and has a better play of colour but I think it may be a dead spot in the corner. Even the face may have one small dead spot in the corner also. I live in Perth and cant seem to find anyone local that can do the polishing? Opals Down Under offer the service from $45 so that may be an option.
I would love some learned opinions on what people think I have here. It really has some lovely colour plays involving all colours and my novice guess would say pin fire pattern on the face. I have uploade 3 pics into gallery under opal ring. I hope this was the correct procedure? Thanks so much for your consideration.

Welcome to the forum Debono. I know nothing about opal, so can't help you there. Once your pictures are in the gallery, you can go to my images and copy and past them to your post.

If you're in Perth, call into the Western Australian Lapidary and Rock Hunting club in Gladstone Rd, Rivervale. I've been there a couple of time and they definitely have the machinery, experience and know how to ID and polish the opal for you.
Common sense isn't exactly common

Floral, Moss?
i'd be wary of the top left corner 2nd pic.. looks like a crack/fracture, hopefully just a play of light... just be careful.
Keep em comin!!!
