AgateMaster Faceting Machine Bearing Replacement
« on: February 11, 2025, 11:56:43 PM »
Hi all,
I see a few threads here about restoring and maintenance on the AgateMaster faceting machine.

I have one purchased direct from JFW Engineering back about 1974. Worked with it occasionally for about 10 years , then its just followed me around from garage to garage until recently when i cleaned up the old desk and started to use it again . Pretty much as  a 8" flatlap to cleanup small slabbed pieces. Always intending to clean it up and start faceting, so finally got to it.

Now that its back in the house and functioning as a faceting machaine again, i realised that the rough grindy noise isnt the old motor(as i added a smaller new one). Its the bearing on the facetor.

My question is , Has anyone done a bearing replacement on one of these machines?  Just like some info on how difficult it might be.
My thoughts its something for a local engineering shop as my home workshop is not to mechanically oriented.
I searched far and wide for assembly diagrams and such , but guess with the age of it thats not likely.

Appreciate any assistance/advice / just plain chatter.
Thanks

Hi Tinminer, I would imagine with a machine of that age, if you haven't got a bearing puller or similar, you may need to drop it into an engineering workshop to remove the old bearing. They can also install the new one correctly. Most bearings are available and being an Aussie made machine, it will most likely use standard bearing sizes. Sorry I can't help with the removal of the shaft, while I've heard of them, I've never seen an Agatemaster, but some here have and may be of more help than I.

Hi Bucket,
yes i came to the same conclusion after taking the pulley off and looking at it. Definitely not a hammer and screwdriver on the old bench job.

Found a local engineering company LTW Engineering Solutions at Mudgeeraba, Len said to bring it over.
Great service, and very reasonable price , dropped it off wednesday 2pm, and Len rang 9am friday ,ready to pickup.

So its all back working and way less noise now.

AND an added bonus he turned the Lap holding screw thread from right to left handed and gave me a nice size brass nut to go on it, so no more cursing when i switch in on.

Wins all around! Glad to hear you were able to get the shaft out OK. Engineering shops are great place, and quite often cheaper than getting a replacement part. One of our club's saws are going through bearing and shaft work at the moment. For less than $500 we should end up with a fully operational saw again that should last for years.
