Advice on gemology course

Hi all
I'm new to the world of gems but have always had a keen interest. I'm looking at doing a gemology course to further my knowledge (preferably with a lot of online components as I run my own business as a tradesperson and wouldn't have the time needed to study on site) I have seen a couple of online ones based overseas but I am not sure if they are recognised in Australia. I'm just looking at having a greater understanding of gems with an appraisal section in there so as I can start as a hobby and hopefully turn it into something greater. If there are any other tips or things I can do to learn that would be great.

May be a good idea to find a forum that has an interest in gemology. Or a Facebook page with similar interests.

Hi Steve,
I did a Diploma of Gemmology quite a while back in Hobart. I was working full time then, and it was manageable over two years with one or two nights a week commitment. To be able to appraise gems or jewellery it requires an additional period of time "in the industry", probably working in a commercial jewellery house to understand what people pay for these items, hope this helps,

Look up your local Minerological society from AFLACCAs website.  It is bound to be able to put you in touch with a GIA member who may be able to help with info on what’s on offer locally.
